Map a 4×5 Seating Chart Without Mirroring the Room

A classroom plan is drawn from the teacher’s viewpoint, but students enter facing the board.

Try This Example

Opens a demo with sample data in a new tab. Your saved lists, settings and history stay in your regular workspace.

Set up the input

Run the example

Set Seats per row to 5 and assign all 20 numbers. Mark Row 1 and physically label Seat 1 from the students’ viewpoint. Mark that same corner on the classroom plan before posting it.

Example output

Illustrative result. A new draw can produce a different selection or order.

RowSeats in order
11. 20 · 2. 18 · 3. 16 · 4. 14 · 5. 12
21. 10 · 2. 8 · 3. 6 · 4. 4 · 5. 2
31. 1 · 2. 3 · 3. 5 · 4. 7 · 5. 9
41. 11 · 2. 13 · 3. 15 · 4. 17 · 5. 19

Check the result

Check Row 1 / Seat 1 and Row 4 / Seat 5 against the real labels. Both viewpoints should lead each student to the same seat, and the chart should cover 20 assignments. For fixed or accessible seats, handle those assignments separately and map the generated positions to the remaining seats.

Open the regular Random Seating Chart.
